Australian Lobster Export Update #6

The Australian rock lobster industry is still working hard behind the scenes to resume trade with China as soon as possible. We are actively engaging across industry and with our customers and government networks to achieve this.

It has taken the collective effort of Australian and Chinese businesses over many decades to create a positive, mutually respectful and beneficial trading relationship. It is in everyone’s best interests that this trade resume, particularly now there is a demand for our premium rock lobster throughout China as they prepare for many family celebrations during November and December.

We urge the Australian Government to restore meaningful dialogue and communication with China in order to resolve the disruption to trade for Australian rock lobsters. Industry regularly informs our Federal and State governments what is at stake and how they can support our industry. The Australian lobster industry is comprised predominantly by family businesses that contribute significant social and economic benefits to Australia’s regional economy across six states.

Industry has commenced planning to service other markets with our premium wild-caught rock lobster. Supply to these markets will increase due to the current uncertainty and trade disruption with our primary market. Hundreds of family-owned small businesses around Australia need to return to fishing in order to generate their income and support their communities.
