Below is correspondence from the Minister for Fisheries, Hon Dave Kelly MLA, confirming his Department will move immediately to renew Managed Fishery Licences on the basis of the current Total Allowable Commercial Catch (TACC) of 6300 tonnes.
The Minister has acknowledged that recent scientific assessments confirm the health of the existing resource and the recommendation from Western Rock Lobster, based on expert evidence, to increase the TACC to 6615 tonnes.
Minister Kelly wants to secure a better economic and social return from any expansion of the TACC.
To this end, he has requested WRL take part in high level discussions with senior Departmental officials over the next four weeks.
The Minister has made it clear he wants to explore a range of initiatives which may help grow the fishery while boosting job creation, tourism opportunities and increased supply to local markets.
On your behalf, WRL will engage in this process in good faith in a bid to achieve practical and equitable outcomes for existing industry participants.
We will ensure you are kept informed of any developments and, as always, your board members will be happy to hear from you on this matter.
